Pre-Conference Workshops - AODC 2008
To further confirm AODC as the
professional development event for Help authors, technical writers and content developers,
two focussed
half-day workshops were held the day before the conference.
Introduction to DITA
Tony Self, HyperWrite
DITA is an open source, XML-based architecture, standard and methodology for
creating, defining, authoring and storing technical information, including user
manuals, Help systems, support information and other forms of documentation and
training materials. Larger organisations are increasingly preferring DITA to
proprietary document storage formats, as DITA offers significant efficiency and
usability advantages. But DITA is not limited to large organisations; it makes
good sense for projects of any size to be moved to the DITA architecture.
In this workshop, the concepts of DITA will be explained through practical
examples, demonstrations, and interactive discussions. Tony Self is a member
of the OASIS DITA Technical Committee.

Adobe Captivate
Matthew Ellison, Ellison Consulting
Adobe Captivate is recognized as a powerful tool for creating Flash-based
software demonstrations and interactive tutorials. Although relatively easy to
learn the basics, there is a large range of more sophisticated and advanced
techniques that are more challenging to master. This workshop reveals some of
the hidden depths of Captivate and demonstrates a range of creative techniques
for exploiting its features and capabilities to the full. It also demystifies
the product by clarifying its principles of operation, enabling you to take more
control of the recording and development process. You will take away numerous
practical tips, tricks and tactics that you can use right away to improve the
effectiveness of your Captivate movies.
If you are a Captivate user who has never been formally trained in the tool,
or are thinking of using Captivate or similar tools for future projects, this
workshop will be invaluable. Matthew Ellison is an Adobe Certified Instructor
for Captivate.
